Van Sickle wins #5–Palisades Collegiate in Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C.–Marquette University Senior Mike Van Sickle continued to add to his storybook career Tueaday by rallying to win the Palisades Collegiate Classic. The all-America candidate closed with back-to-back birdies to claim his 11th collegiate victory, finishing with a final-round 66 at the par-72 Palisades Country Club.

It is the fifth win this season for Van Sickle, who carded scores of 69-65-66, and the fourth time this year he has come from behind on the final day to claim medalist honors.

Van Sickle erased Monday’s two-stroke deficit to finish at 16-under-par 200, good enough to edge VCU’s Vincent Nadeau who finished at 202, and Louisville’s Riley Wheeldon (204), who shot a tournament-record 61 in the second round and was the co-leader with Nadeau heading into Tuesday.

Van Sickle’s two-day total was one stroke shy of matching his 54-hole collegiate low score of 199, which he fired back in October en route to winning the Xavier Invitational.

Marquette placed third overall with a team score of six-under 858. It was the Golden Eagles’ lowest tally in their last seven events. Fellow senior Dustin Schwab posted his lowest tournament score of the season finishing up Tuesday at 1-under 215 (70-72-73). Schwab tied for 16h place on the individual leaderboard.

VCU won the tournament with a team score of 28-under 836, seven strokes better than Louisville (843), who the Golden Eagles will face again this weekend when the two teams tee up at the BIG EAST Men’s Golf Championship, to be held April 19-22 at Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club in Dade City, Fla.
