Smith, Knapp, strong qualifiers in USGA Mid-Am

Defending champion, Nathan Smith, Pittsburgh, tied for medalist honors in the USGA Mid-Amateur Championship, shooting 72-72 tying two others in windy conditions. Close behind, tied for fourth was 2008 Mid-Am semi-finalist, Sean Knapp, Oakmont, with 72-73–145.  Match play begins on Monday, September 27. Other area players were Erik Bertrand, Pittsburgh, 74-81–155, and Jim Sullivan, New Kensington, 81-83–164.  Both missed thecut.
