Leech named Junior Player of the Year

The Western Pennsylvania Golf Association has named Tommy Leech of Pittsburgh Junior Player of the Year. The award was presented at the annual Players Dinner at Wildwood Golf Club.

Leech won both the West Penn Junior Championship at Hannastown and the C.R. Miller Match Play Invitational at Fox Chapel. He joins William Miller, 2005, and Phil Newcamp, Jr., 1992, as the only golfers to win both the Junior and Miller titles in the same year.

Connor Garrity of Hollidaysburg finished second. He was a finalist in the Miller, finished fourth in the West Penn Junior, and finished T-7 in the Pennsylvania Junior.

In a tie for third was Oakmont’s Justin Miller and Darren Simons of St. Marys. Miller was a semi-finalist in the Miller, an alternate for the USGA Junior Amateur, and finished T-3 in the Pennsylvania Junior. Simons, the 2009 West Penn Junior Champion, finished third in the West Penn Junior and qualified for the USGA Junior.

Easton Renwick of Punxsutawney, the 2008 and 2009 Junior Player of the Year, finished fifth. He was runner-up in the West Penn Junior, the only event he was able to participate in a a junior golfer in 2010.
