Nathan Smith named Player of the Decade

From 2003-2010, Nathan Smith’s incredible run was highlighted by three USGA Mid-Amateur titles, 2003, 2009, and 2010, plus the last four West Penn Amateurs, 2007-10, played at Sunnehanna, Bedford Springs, Allegheny, and Sewickley Heights.  In all Smith has won more than twenty competitions, including fifteen WPGA championships, both individual and team.  For these achievements, he was named the Association’s Player of the Decade, 2001-10.  He also played on four USGA teams, including the 2009 Walker Cup played at Merion GC, outside Philadelphia.

The award was presented by Player of the 90’s Sean Knapp at the Fall Players Dinner at Wildwood GC on October 12.  Knapp and Smith are good friends as well as competitors.  They have joined forces to win five of the last six Fred Brand Foursomes titles, with 2009 being the highlight.  The duo set a new scoring record that year with 66-67–133.
