When Nathan Smith was named by the USGA to his second Walker Cup team earlier this month, he joins William C. Fownes, Oakmont, as the area’s only men who have played on two teams. Fownes, son of Oakmont’s founder Henry C., won eight West Penn Amateurs from 1903-16, and also won the Pennsylvania Amateur, West Penn Amateur and US Amateur in 1910. He was the Playing Captain for the first Walker Cup team in 1922, then played again in 1924. A member of the USGA Executive Committee, he was USGA President, 1926-27. The West Penn Amateur trophy is named after him, and Nathan Smith has won four Amateur titles.
Other local golfers on Walker Cup teams are S. Davidson Herron, ’23, Jim Simons, ’71, plus two on the 1981 team–Dick VonTacky and Frank Fuhrer, III.
These achievements are bettered in Curtis Cup teams by two area players. Judy Oliver played on three teams, 1978, 1980, and 1982, while Carol Semple Thompson played on twelve teams, 1974-2002. In addition, New Castle’s Janie Fassinger played on the 1971 Curtis Cup team.
