Partners championships highlighted by back-to-back champions

May marks the annual playing of the Association’s foursomes championships. The Fred Brand Foursomes Championship is played at Longue Vue Club and the Semple Brothers Century Foursomes Championship is played at Allegheny Country Club.  What was once a combined competition has turned into two separate Championships due to an increased number of entries. The Brand is open to all combinations of partners, while the Semple Brothers is limited to teams of partners with a combined age of 100 years. The Semple Brothers also has a senior flight for teams where both partners are at least 55 years of age. Both Championships present a unique format, Foursomes, also known as alternate shot, and challenges a golfer’s ability as well as his patience and team work.

Earlier this month at the Fred Brand the 36 hole competition ended in a tie and a hole-by-hole playoff took place between the teams of Sean Knapp and Nathan Smith, Rick Stimmel and Jon Smarrelli, and David and Ronald DeNunzio. The playoff lasted four holes and the DeNuznio brothers successfully defended the championship.

At the Semple Brothers, a year after the team of David Brown and Sean Knapp had just qualified for the competition by a few days, the team cruised to their second straight victory in their second appearance. After round one, Brown and Knapp had posted a 1-over 71 to head into the second round tied with John Jones and Paul Schlachter.  In the final round Knapp & Brown carded a 2-under 68 for a 139 total and a 4 stroke victory.

In the senior flight, past president of the West Penn Golf Association and long time Association volunteer George Anderson and his partner Jerry Roman carded 73-77—150 to claim victory by 3 strokes over the team of Jim Crawford & Perry Graciano.
