Top players’ histories include Erie wins

West Penn Amateur’s defending champion David Brown, who won last year at Oakmont, will be seeking his second WPGA title on an Erie course.  Brown won the 2003 WPGA Mid-Amateur at Lake Shore, defeating Sean Knapp in a playoff.

Knapp won six consecutive Amateurs, 1998-2003, including two wins in Erie–1998 at Kahkwa, this year’s site, and 2002 at Lake View. Knapp also enjoyed success in Erie as a high school basketball standout with one of his best games ever.

Rick Stimmel, reinstated to amateur golf last Fall, won the 1996 Pennsylvania Amateur at Lake View. His strong comeback to amateur competitions includes a Four-Ball title last Fall at Totteridge partnered with Chad Rittle, a runner-up in the Fred Brand Foursomes last month teamed with Jon Smarelli, a runner-up in the WPGA Mid-Amateur at Westmoreland on May 14, and a spot in the USGA Sectional Qualifying Rounds at Columbus on June 4.

The Kahkwa Club, a Donald Ross design over 100 years old, will play as a par-70 just over 6500 yards for the Amateur.
