138’s for Wheatcroft and Popeck: not quite for US Open

Two area players with ties to Washington, PA, came closest to qualifying for the US Open, to be played next week at The Olympic Club in San Francisco. They shot identical scores at different sites.

Steve Wheatcroft shot 68-70–138 at Germantown CC near Memphis on Tuesday, June 5. The rounds were delayed one day by wet conditions.  In a field with many PGA Tour players, Wheatcroft fell two strokes short of qualifying for his second US Open. He is scheduled to play in the Memphis PGA Tour stop starting on Thursday.

John Popeck also shot 68-70 at Springfield CC near Dayton, Ohio on Monday, June 4. He was four strokes short. Popeck will compete in the upcoming PNC West Penn Open at Fox Chapel GC.

Other local players scores can be found on the USGA web-site, www.usga.org. They played at the Ohio sites, Columbus and Springfield.
