Sean Knapp, Oakmont, was named the Association’s Player of the Year for the thirteenth time since 1994, edging USGA Mid-Amateur champion Nathan Smith, Pittsburgh. Knapp, the area’s top player for the first nine years of Honor Roll tabulations, 1994-2002, won the West Penn Mid-Amateur with a pair of 68’s at Westmoreland in wet and rainy conditions and the Pennsylvania Public Links at Applecross, CC, Downingtown. Other highlights include recording a 72-hole score at the USGA Senior Open Championship, one of two amateurs to make the cut, and advancing to the 3rd round of the USGA Mid-Amateur Championship where Smith defeated him in 19 holes. The Junior Player of the Year is Tommy Nettles, McMurray, whose season was highlighted by a victory in the WPGA Junior Championship at Grove City. He edged Brent Rodgers, Cranberry, who won the CR Miller Match Play title at Laurel Valley. (Junior Honor Roll)
Senior Player of the Year is Perry Graciano, Pittsburgh, in his first year of eligibility. Graciano won the WPGA Senior Amateur Championship at Edgewood. Runner-up is Don Erickson, III, DuBois, who won Sunnehanna Senior Championship. Third on the Honor Roll is Paul Schlachter, Bridgeville, who was Senior Player of the Year for eight consecutive seasons, 2004-2011. Schlachter won this year’s Pennsylvania Senior Amateur. Knapp, Smith, Nettles, Rodgers, Graciano, Erickson, Schlachter and others will be honored on Monday, October 8, at the Fall Players Dinner scheduled at Fox Chapel.
