Rocco Mediate wasted no time in winning on the Champions Tour. He followed a second round 61 with a final round 1-under par 71 on The Old Course at Broken Sound Club in Boca Raton to win the Allianz Championship by two shots over Tom Pernice, Jr.
Mediate finished the event at 17-under 199 to win his Champions Tour debut.
Mediate is the 16th golfer to win his first start on the Champions Tour, and he joins Arnold Palmer, who also won his Champions Tour debut, as a winner on both the PGA and Champions Tours. Mediate won six times on the PGA Tour since he turned professional in 1985, with his first coming in 1991 in the Doral-Ryder Open.
Mediate’s timing was excellent. He lost his two year exemption at the end of the 2012 season for his PGA Tour victory in the 2010 Frys.com Open.
Mediate is originally from Greensburg and won one WPGA event, the 1982 Four-Ball Championship at Youghiogheny Country Club with partner John J. Adams. He was runner-up to Don Totten in the 1981 West Penn Amateur Championship at his home club, Greensburg Country Club, and he was also runner-up to George Benson in the 1981 West Penn Amateur at Longue Vue Club. Mediate finished third in the 1983 West Penn Amateur at Sewickley Heights Golf Club won by Marshall Marraccini.
