Partnered with Punxsutawney’s Frank Fairman, Arnold Cutrell of Greensburg won his 13th WPGA competition yesterday in the Fred Brand Foursomes at Longue Vue Club. The pair shot 72-70 – 142, edging the recent dominant team of Sean Knapp and Nathan Smith who recorded 74-69 – 143. Knapp and Smith, who won five Brands in six years from 2005-2011, rallied for 31 on their final nine to almost catch the leaders. The teams were paired together.
Cutrell has won three Fred Brand Foursomes, one each with Bill Baloh in 1997, Jim Bryan in 2002 and now with Fairman. He ties Knapp with the most number of three different winning partners. Cutrell has also won three Four-Ball titles, in 1986 and 1996 with Baloh and 2008 with Bryan. He also won the 2010 Semple Century Foursomes with Joe Corsi.
Cutrell’s individual titles include the 1980 Boys, 1981 C.R. Miller Junior Match Play, 1990 West Penn Open and three Mid-Amateurs in 2004, 2005 and 2011. His thirteen wins have occurred in seven different championships. A top player as a junior, his first win and most recent are 33 years apart.
Cutrell needs one more win to tie two early legends, Oakmont’s William C.Fownes and South Hills’ Jack Benson, both who have won 14. The others ahead of him are Knapp with 37, Smith with 19, and Youghiogheny’s Marshall Marraccini with 16 Association titles.
