Four golfers with strong resumes have advanced through stroke play qualifying into match play in the U.S. Senior Amateur and U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur.
At the Women’s Senior Amateur held at CordeValle Golf Club in San Martin, CA, Sewickley’s Carol Semple Thompson shot 79-80–159 while Indiana’s Sue McMurdy recorded 79-81–160. The playoff score for match play was 164. Thompson won four consecutive Senior Women’s Amateurs from 1999 to 2002 and has continued to record strong finishes. McMurdy, in her first Senior Women’s championship has qualified for several USGA competitions throughout her career.
The Senior Amateur is being played at Wade Hampton Golf Club in Cashiers, NC. Paul Schlachter, Bridgeville, recorded 72-80–152 with a second nine 3-under par 33 during the first round to advance to match play for the third time. Don Erickson, DuBois, shot 76-77–153. He also recovered in round one with a one-under-par 35 on his second nine. This is Erickson’s second time qualifying for match play in the Senior Amateur. The playoff was at 156. Both have qualified for several Amateurs and Mid-Amateurs previously.
