Palmer’s grandson advances to finals. Other local players miss.

Sam Saunders, Fort Collins, Colorado, the grandson of Arnold Palmer, moved solidly through the first two stages of the Tour Qualifying Schools and advanced to the finals in Palm Springs, California, on December 12-17 at PGA West’s TPC Stadium and Nicklaus courses.

Three other players with local ties played in the second stage and did not qualify.

Mike VanSickle, Wexford, this year’s PNC West Penn Open champion, shot 69-71-70-71–281, and missed by two strokes at Southern Hills Plantation Club in Brooksville, Florida.

John Popeck, Bridgeville, also played at Brooksville and recorded 76-73-71-71–291 to tie for 65th place.

Jon Mills, Indiana, who has played the PGA and tours for nearly a decade, also tied for 65th place on scores of 76-70-71-72–289 at Plantation Preserve GC & Club, Plantation, Florida.

Pittsburgh native Brendon Todd secured his 2014 PGA Tour card and has recorded two strong finishes so far this season with and earned over $160,000.

Washington native Steve Wheatcroft will return to the Web.Com Tour for 2014.
