Saint Bonaventure junior Joshua Stauffer, the 2012-2013 Frank Fuhrer III Collegiate Player of the Year, and six other student athletes have been added to the 2014-15 Frank Fuhrer III Collegiate Player of the Year Watch List. Now in its 14th year, the Fuhrer Award is designated to recognize outstanding golf performance from a collegiate player that hails from Western Pennsylvania.
The 2014-2015 season watch list includes 1 senior, 2 juniors, 2 sophomores and 2 freshmen with student athletes competing at colleges in the states of Connecticut, Indiana, New York, Ohio and Pennsylvania. The following players are recognized for their season performance on the Fuhrer Award Watch List: Matt Barto, Freshman (Gannon), William Betts, Junior (Hartford), Chris Kupniewski, Sophomore (Mercyhurst), Ryan Prokay, Senior (Robert Morris), Brett Rinker, Sophomore (Bowling Green), Thomas Steve, Freshman (Notre Dame) and Joshua Stauffer, Junior (St. Bonaventure). Other players may be added to the Watch List prior to the selection of finalists based on continued season performance.
The Fuhrer Award is named in honor of Frank Fuhrer III. Now a businessman in Pittsburgh, Mr. Fuhrer’s accomplishments on the golf course include being named All-American at University of North Carolina Chapel Hill from 1979-1981, All ACC 1979-1981, named to the 1981 USGA Walker Cup team, winner of the 1981 Western Amateur and the winner of 11 Western Pennsylvania Golf Association Championships. Mr. Fuhrer and Arnold Palmer are the only two players in the Associationís history to win the WPGA Junior, Amateur and Open in a career. Mr. Fuhrer was the #2 ranked Amateur in the United States in 1981 and is one of the leading supporters of the WPGA. Previous recipients include Mike Van Sickle, Justin Smith, Rachel Rohanna and Robert Rohanna.
